STORIES OF CHANGE

Many citizens in South Africa live in conditions that make social distancing impossible. While the country attempts to keep people in their homes, it is having an adverse effect in the communities surrounding Norwegian Settlers Church. Crime has skyrocketed, and people are living in fear and confusion. We have partnered with Norwegian Settlers Church to open up five Safe Places where people can get help when in danger. These Safe Places are located in communities that police won’t enter into after dark, so the church has created a literal space to which people can run for rescue. Typically women and children are the most vulnerable, however, they are seeing men run for rescue as well. The Safe Places have doubled as food distribution locations since people can’t get access to food. NSC has also been approved by authorities to open up their building as a temporary hospital, holding up to 200 beds. This church is truly meeting the needs of the people. Lake Pointe recently gave NSC an additional $15,000 above and beyond our normal gifts so the church could use the money to rescue those in danger, feed the hungry and care for the sick.

Debbie Sudduth is a longtime Lake Pointe member who suffered incredibly as she watched her beloved husband succumb to an illness that took his life. In her grieving process, she realized that she needed help from others. She didn’t want help, but she needed it. Her Life Group stepped up and took care of items around the house, provided meals, and gave her support. These acts of kindness changed Debbie’s life for the better and helped her realize that she could perservere. In her healing process, Debbie reflected on the ways that other people’s kindness lifted her and decided she wanted to do that for others. Hands of Mercy was birthed to take care of widows and meet tangible needs by mobilizing volunteers. Today, hundreds of Lake Pointe members volunteer for Hands of Mercy.

Due to government restrictions, abortions are not allowed during the coronavirus pandemic, so the Rockwall & Mesquite Caring Pregnancy Center has many new patients coming to them asking for help to keep babies they once planned to terminate. Lake Pointe has given an additional $5,000 above our regular gifts to support the pregnancy center to be able to meet needs. We are also asking people to rally in prayer for women who are scared about the decisions that lie ahead. Let this miracle of life change them forever!
